ABOUT THE TANGALOOMA WILD DOLPHIN FEEDING PROGRAM

Tangalooma’s wild dolphin feeding program operates each evening at sunset. The Dolphin Care Team, consisting of Eco Rangers and dedicated staff, run the program which operates to strict guidelines to ensure the protection of the dolphins.

The dolphins come into feed, usually arriving just after sunset, and of their own accord. We never call the dolphins in. It is quite normal for any one of them to be absent from the feed on consecutive nights and this is not something to be worried about – they are probably having too much fun in the Bay!

To ensure the dolphins maintain their natural instincts and independence, Tangalooma only feed each of the dolphins between 10 to 20 percent of their daily food requirement. This ensures they also hunt for themselves and can survive on their own. Herring are fed to the dolphins as they are a species that is commonly found in the Bay.

Dolphins prefer herring due to their high fat and minimal bone content which make them easier to digest.

SUSTAINABLE & RESPONSIBLE DOLPHIN FEEDING & HUMAN INTERACTIONS

The Tangalooma Island Resort Wild Dolphin Feeding Program is run to strict guidelines to ensure the safety of all guests and dolphins involved.

The dolphins that visit us do not depend on us and we discourage them from becoming too tame. This ensures the dolphins maintain their natural instincts and independence. Tangalooma only feeds each of the dolphins between 10% to 20% of their daily food requirement; this means the dolphins must still hunt for themselves daily in order to meet their food requirement. There have been special circumstances in which the Tangalooma Dolphin Care team and Eco Centre staff have decided to increase a particular dolphins intake to ensure its survival.

We feed the dolphins a varying diet of fish, although we mostly provision the dolphins herring. Herring are fed to the dolphins as they are a species that is commonly found in the Bay. Dolphins also prefer herring due to their high fat and minimal bone content which make them easier to digest.

Dolphins have sensitive skin and some do not like being touched by humans. Over the years many guests have visited and fed the dolphins, and if patting was allowed this would become very stressful for the dolphins. There is also a bucket provided to guests before handling the fish, it is important that guests quickly disinfect their hands before handling the fish. It is important that we do not pass any bacteria onto the dolphins when handling the fish we feed them.

Flash photography from the beach is not permitted but it is allowed from the jetty. Close-up camera flashes may cause the dolphins stress, and may be harmful to their sensitive eyes. The Tangalooma Photoshop team are trained to take flash photos behind the dolphins so that they are not in direct view of the dolphins.

Please respect these rules when feeding the dolphins.

We occasionally get more dolphins visiting the feeding program, however we will still not feed them as only the dolphins within Tinkerbell’s social and family group are fed at the provisioning program. This is so we keep this as a natural interaction with a family of dolphins for our guest enjoyment and safety.

Tangalooma operates launch transfer services from Holt Street Wharf, Pinkenba in Brisbane. Passengers travel in comfort across Moreton Bay aboard one of three high speed catamarans – the Tangalooma Jet, Flyer, and Express. To reduce emissions, the fleet runs on the highest grade and only DERM-approved marine bio-fuel.

Waders Hire:
Waders are a waterproof boot extending from the foot to the chest (similar to overalls). Waders are available to hire for $15.00 to help keep you dry during dolphin feeding – $2.00 from each rental is donated to the Tangalooma EcoMarines. They are available to hire from a stand in front of the Eco Centre.
