The Flinders Ranges National Park encompasses some of the most spectacular scenery in South Australia, made famous by the paintings of Sir Hans Heysen. The Park is world-renowned for its geological history and includes impressive fossil remains.

Adnyamathanha people have lived in the Flinders Ranges for tens of thousands of years and the region remains of enormous significance today in contemporary Adnyamathanha society.

European occupation of the Flinders Ranges in the mid-nineteenth century brought widespread environmental modifications. Despite these changes, the Park supports examples of natural and semi-arid ecosystems, and includes many plants and animals of conservation significance. The most notable of these is probably the yellow-footed rock wallaby which can be found in rocky gorges within the Park.

Regular air services operate to Port Augusta (160km away). Other small private airstrips are also available by arrangement only. Transfers can be organised by Australia and Beyond Holidays

Adelaide | Barossa Valley | Clare Valley | Orroroo | Wilpena One of the more indulgent journeys to Wilpena Pound includes the famous wine regions of South Australia. The Barossa Valley is renowned for its full bodied Shiraz, while the Clare Valley is known for its favoursome and delicate Riesling. After collecting some magnificent wines, Orroroo is a pleasant, scenic example of an outback Australian town. From Orroroo and onto Hawker is a comfortable drive leading you into the Flinders Ranges National Park and Wilpena Pound Resort.
ROUTE 02 – OUTBACK AUSTRALIAN JOURNEY
Adelaide | Clare Valley | Melrose | Quorn | Wilpena On this route you’ll truly experience South Australia and the outback. Stopping at Clare, you’ll have the opportunity to see a beautiful town that has the added bonus of being located within one of Australia’s renowned wine making regions. For your next stop,
Melrose will give you an idea of what it’s like to reside in a sleepy outback town. Quorn was the site of one of South
Australia’s earliest settlements and also houses the Pichi Richi Historic railway. It also provides a welcome place to rest before the final stretch, the entrance into the Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound.
ROUTE 03 – PORTS OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Adelaide | Port Wakefield | Port Pirie | Port Germein |
Port Augusta | Wilpena
While South Australia is famous for the outback and its wine making regions, we can’t forget about the contribution our ports have made to this great state. Departing Adelaide, your frst stop is Port Wakefeld, where there’s amazing history and waterfront buildings to be seen. On to Port Pirie, a beautiful costal town and harbour where you can experience a lifestyle centred on the waters of the gulf. Port Augusta is commonly known as the crossroads of Australia and is where roads from Adelaide, the Flinders Ranges, Alice Springs, and Perth intersect. Refurbishment Program 2022

New Visitor Experience of the Flinders Ranges Flagged as Plans for Wilpena Pound Resort Upgrade Confirmed Plans for a significant upgrade to Flinders Ranges centrally located Wilpena Pound Resort have been confirmed this week following a $3million grant agreement for capital works to commence immediately and continue for the coming 24 months. NRMA Parks and Resorts which oversees management of the First Nations-owned and operated accommodation, dining and experiences hub has worked on plans for a swag of park improvements in consultation with South Australia’s Department of Environment and Water (DEW) and Indigenous Business Australia (IBA), who have together provided funding for the works. Included is a new accommodation offering: four new Stargazing Safari tents delivering a premium glamping experience complete with ensuite and sleeping nook for kids plus outdoor bathing and generous daybed. The new tents feature heating and cooling and are designed to make the most of the Flinders Ranges inky night skies where the southern skies are a star attraction as the night falls. Day and overnight visitors to Wilpena Pound will arrive via a new Welcome Entry precinct, where interpretive screening and pathways will lead to a centralised hub including the Visitors Centre and IGA for information and supplies and an extended deck area for lounging. A new amphitheatre will provide space for Welcome to Country ceremonies, cultural talks and events. Interpretive signage and wayfinding information along the many paths and hikes leading from Wilpena Pound will be upgraded to offer a more informative and rewarding experience of the Flinders Ranges. The existing Ikara Safari tents will also receive upgrades including new entrances, furniture and soft furnishings, and the Ikara communal dining area will receive a makeover with extensions to the outdoor deck, new indoor and outdoor furniture and a state-of-the art camp kitchen. A dedicated platform will be ideal for stargazing, featuring firepits and an Ikara-inspired cast iron globe designed by a local Indigenous artist. Existing hotel style accommodation will also receive significant makeover, with some 50 rooms will receive contemporary new ensuite bathrooms and the interiors refreshed with new furnishings and styling. The three shared amenities blocks will also be refurbished, offering updated features for campers and caravanners in the protected camping precinct. Dining at the Wilpena Restaurant will have a whole new look, with new floor to ceiling glass windows making the most of the bushland views and offer a chance to spot wildlife while enjoying a morning coffee. Wilpena Pound Resort Manager Mitchell Gawthorn said the plans had been a result of careful negotiation with the region’s Adnyamathanha people who owned and worked at the resort. “We’re all very excited to see some real investment in the historic property’s accommodation and dining options, and for the opportunities to enrich the guest experience – whether day or overnight visitors – of the incredible Flinders Ranges,” Mr Gawthorn said. “As we welcome more travellers who are interested in the First Nations heritage and stories of this ancient land, we are pleased to put in place contemporary features that will offer a more rewarding cultural and experiential getaway.” ABOUT Wilpena Pound Resort is located some 430km north of Adelaide in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Ikara Wilpena Pound is Adnyamathanha Yarta or Country.
