Derby – Windjana National Park – 157km
Departing Derby in the morning head towards Windjana Gorge National Park. Stop off on
the way to visit the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre.
From Windjana choose to take the 37km drive out to Western Australia’s oldest cave
system Tunnel Creek, famous as a hideout last century by Aboriginal warrior Jandamarra.
At Windjana, follow the Gorge Walk trail which begins at the camping area and winds through the gorge for 3.5km each way. At the end of the gorge walk marvel at the freshwater crocodiles basking in the area.
Spend the night at the Windjana Gorge camp site.

Windjana Gorge National Park – Bell Gorge/Mount Hart Homestead
Windjana Gorge National Park – Bell Gorge – 158km
Follow the road into the King Leopold Ranges, stopping at Lennard Gorge for a swim, or at Inglis Gap to take in the view from the lookout.
You can choose to stay overnight at Mount Hart Homestead 50 kilometres from the turnoff at the Gibb River Road or to head to Bell Gorge to stay at Silent Grove Campground, APT Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge or Imintji Campground.
Mount Hart Homestead is a good base to explore nearby Matthew Gorge and the pockets of rainforest below Mt Matthew is a great spot for birdwatching.
If you have time, take a couple of days to explore both the areas of Mount Hart Homestead and Bell Gorge. Swimming at the spectacular Bell Gorge is a must!
Bell Gorge/Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge – Manning Gorge
Bell Gorge – Manning Gorge -126 kilometres
Stop at the spectacular Galvans Gorge on the way to Mount Barnett roadhouse and the camping ground at Manning Gorge (fees payable). Join a guided walk (operated by Mount Barnett roadhouse) up the river to Upper Manning Gorge.

Manning Gorge – Drysdale River Station
Manning Gorge – Drysdale River Station -165 kilometres
Head for Drysdale River Station – the gateway to the Mitchell River National Park, Mitchell and Merton Falls, Surveyors Pool, Mitchell and King Edward rivers as well as many historical Indigenous sites. Stay for two nights in cabin-style accommodation or camping in the station grounds to explore the rainforests and open woodlands surrounding the area, or go fishing on the riverbanks.
From Drydale River Station you can choose to drive further up to Kulumbura and the Mitchell Plateau. If time limited, Drysdale River Station also offers scenic flights over the Prince Regent River, and the Mitchell Falls.
Drysdale River Station – Home Valley Station

Head towards Home Valley Station. An outback oasis nestled at the foot of the spectacular Cockburn Ranges, the station offers wide range of guided tours, activities, and accommodation options.

Home Valley Station – El Questro Wilderness Park

The journey to El Questro Wilderness Park takes you past the popular swimming spot at Durack River crossing, Jack’s Waterhole (famous for its barramundi fishing), the Cockburn Ranges and the stunning Pentecost River. Arriving at El Questro Wilderness Park you’ll find a wide range of guided nature experiences and accommodation options. Spend a few days exploring the park. Visit the thermal ponds at Zebedee Springs or take a boat down the Chamberlain Gorge and try barramundi fishing.
El Questro Wilderness Park – Kununurra
El Questro Wilderness Park – Kununurra – 103 kilometres
From El Questro depart for Kununurra. Using Kununurra as your base for a few days explore the surrounding areas of Wyndham, Lake Argyle and the Bungle Bungle. The Bungle Bungle turn off is about 250 km from Kununurra. Once off the highway, it is a 53 km drive on an unsealed road to the national park entrance. If time limited, take a scenic flight from Kununurra over the Bungle Bungle Range.

Itinerary – Kununurra and East Kimberley in 6 Days
Kununurra and its surrounding areas offer visitors a huge range of things to see & do, allow yourself extra time to enjoy all the sights at your leisure, and to spend time at some of the freshwater swimming spots just outside the town.
Day 1. Kununurra
Arrive at Kununurra, the eastern gateway to the Kimberley and check into your choice of accommodation. Late afternoon, take a cruise on beautiful Lake Kununurra and enjoy a delicious barbeque dinner as you watch the sun set over the lake.
Day 2. Ord River and Lake Argyle
In the morning, enjoy a day cruise up the Ord River. See native flora and fauna, have a swim in the clear fresh water and enjoy a gourmet lunch. In the afternoon, view the massive inland sea of Lake Argyle and the Ord River Dam, or, if you are keen on fishing, join a tour on the Lower Ord and chase the elusive Barramundi.
Day 3. Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Range)
Take a scenic flight to the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Range). Spend the day exploring this amazing park with a local guide. Your return flights take you over the largest operating Diamond Mine in the World – Argyle Diamond Mine. Alternatively, stay overnight in the park at one of the safari camps.
Day 4. El Questro Wilderness Park/Mitchell Plateau
Join a four-wheel drive tour to El Questro Wilderness Park. Hike through spectacular gorge country and swim in fresh waterholes. Choose to stay overnight or head back into Kununurra. Alternatively, join a scenic flight over the Kimberley Coast and the spectacular Mitchell Falls, with options to land and hike to the falls, to stay overnight nearby and to visit Kalumburu Community for a cultural tour.
Day 5. Kununurra
Spend the morning exploring Kununurra’s contemporary and Indigenous art galleries as well as the Argyle Diamond showrooms. Or, if you are feeling energetic, wander through the ancient rock formations at Hidden Valley Mirima National Park.
In the afternoon, explore the outskirts of Kununurra by car, stopping off for a tasting at the award- winning rum distillery or for a delicious local mango smoothie!
Day 6. Kununurra
Enjoy a relaxing morning before transferring to Kununurra Airport for your flight home.

Your starting destination: Onslow
Begin your journey at Onslow which has the aptly named Sunset Beach and Sunrise Beach. Stay overnight at the contemporary Onslow Beach Resort. Love fishing and diving? A day trip to the nearby Mackerel Islands will keep you amused or why not book island accommodation and stay for a few days.
Leg 1: Onslow to Tom Price
(approx. 5 hrs – fuel up at Tom Price!)
Travelling to Tom Price on the Nanutarra Road? Look out for Cheela Plains Station, a welcome stop with camping accommodation and tours of the surrounding landscape. Stop by Paraburdoo and admire the Resiliance sculpture. Once in Tom Price tour the massive operations at Rio Tinto’s open- cut iron ore mine with Lestok Tours. Drive to the top of Mt Nameless Jarndunmunha for views of the Hamersley Ranges. Overnight it at the Tom Price Tourist Park.
Leg 2: Tom Price to Karijini National Park
(approx. 1.5 hrs – Fuel up at Tom Price again!)
Continue to Karijini National Park. Visit the Karijini Visitor Centre and its interpretative display to fully comprehend its geology, culture and wildlife. Walk the Dales Gorge trail, take a dip in the pools of Fern Pool, Fortescue Falls and Circular Pool. Prefer someone else to lead the way? Take a tour of the gorges with Lestok Tours from the Karijini Eco Retreat. Enjoy an overnight stay in the park
at Karijini Eco Retreat, or camp at Dales Gorge campground.
Check out the stunning Kalamina Gorge to explore the waterfall upstream. Don’t miss the Joffre Falls lookout and Oxers Lookout the junction of Weano, Red, Hancock and Joffre Gorges. For the fit; descend to the bottom of Hancock Gorge or Weano Gorge and swim in freshwater pools. Love adventure? Then abseil the gorges and tube the waterways with West Oz Active Adventures.
Leg 3: Karijini to Millstream Chichester National Park
(approx. 8 hrs)
From Karijini to Millstream Chichester, journey along the unsealed road adjacent to the longest privately owned railway in the world. Obtain a permit to drive on this road from the Tom Price Visitor Centre. Alternatively, travel the Roebourne Wittenoom Road. Visit Millstream Homestead, which is now the park’s visitor centre. Enjoy a walk around Jirndawurrunha Pool and take in a sunset at Cliff Lookout. Before exiting the park, take a drive to the peak of Mount Herbert for views of the plain. Upon descent enjoy a swim at Python Pool. Camp in one of several designated areas within the park.
Leg 4: Millstream Chichester to Dampier Archipelago via Karratha
(approx. 3 hrs – Fuel up at Karratha!)
Travel to Dampier. Explore the islands of the Dampier Archipelago with Discovery Cruising. If fishing is your passion then consider an extended cruise for a five day fishing holiday to the Montebello Islands by Pelican Charters. Visiting from July to September? Keep your eyes peeled for migrating whales. You can also hire a boat and head out amongst the 42 islands to fish. Head to Karratha and dine in the city centre. Leg 5: Karratha to Point Samson via Roebourne & Cossack

Journey to Point Samson, stopping in at Roebourne. Discover the stories of Roebourne on the Heritage Trail. In Cossack wander around the beautifully restored buildings and enjoy the view from Reader Head Lookout. Arrive in Point Samson, where you can cast a line and enjoy a sunset drink overlooking the coast. The Cove Holiday Village offers campsites and accommodation.
Leg 6: Point Samson to Port Hedland
(approx. 2.25 hrs – Fuel up at Port Hedland!)
Travel to Port Hedland via the historic copper mining town of Whim Creek. Marvel at the massive salt piles that act as a gateway to the town. Tour BHP Billiton port facilities, follow the cultural and heritage trail and check out the museum and Court House Gallery. Visit the harbour, the closest vantage point in Australia to observe the massive ore-carriers and salt ships passing through.
